Samuel Whitehorne Museum
Samuel Whitehorne, Jr. made a fortune in
Newport through a variety of commercial enterprises. With the town’s
economy in a shambles after the American Revolution, Whitehorne was
one of the last of Newport’s great merchant princes. Built on Thames
Street proudly facing the water, Whitehorne’s house was to be a
symbol of his prosperity. Unfortunately he never saw it completed.
Two of his ships were lost at sea, and he went bankrupt. Thames
